If you are looking for a fancy, lightweight,
high-modulus graphite rod capable of delicately placing a custom hand-tied
fly in front of a majestic, rising fish, please turn the page quickly,
‘cause this ain’t your rod. On the other hand, if you want a butt-kicking,
heavy-walled glass blank rod for some serious heavy-duty tough guy fishing,
kick off your work boots, turn off the F350 Super Duty*, and sit back in
the
recliner while you check these rods out. Sometimes you just need something
with guts, something heavy-duty, and ready for anything you can throw at it.
Penn Slammer® Rods are constructed from thick-walled tubular glass blanks
incorporating Penn’s IST Technology for durability and power. A favorite rod
among wreck fishing anglers, and pier and bridge anglers, the Slammer® Rod
was designed for durability. This is more of your meat and potatoes kind of
rod, versus a Tofu and Bean Sprouts type of rod. It is for anglers that
prefer to fish, rather than prance around the flats in a skiff commenting on
the tranquility of the morning calm. If you are thinking, am I really tough
enough to fish with such a rod, no worries pal, ‘cause our rod designers
wouldn’t let us go too far off the deep end. We tried for sand paper as grip
material, citing the good grip you would get with it, but they said the EVA
Foam would be more comfortable and still have a good grip. Using an actual
broomstick for a blank was considered, but according to the designers, the
parabolic taper of the Slammer would be more powerful and angler friendly.
For guide-wraps, we thought Duct Tape was a no-brainer; again, our rod
designers won this battle, so it is only quality threadwork for the Slammer
Rods. Too bad, the Duct tape would have looked nice. *F350 Super Duty is a
certified tough-guy product and registered trademark of the Ford
Corporation.
